Red Cat Holdings (Nasdaq: RCAT) has disclosed details of a significant contract to deliver 173 Black Widow small unmanned aircraft systems to Japan’s Ministry of Defense. The contract award came through a competitive acquisition process led by the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), which manages defense equipment procurement for Japan.
Second Asia-Pacific Military Customer
The Japanese Army (JGSDF) will serve as the end-user for these tactical drone systems, making this Red Cat’s second military contract from an Asia-Pacific ally following a previous order from the Australian Army. The 173 systems are being delivered under Japan Fiscal Year 2026 funding, with Red Cat working alongside Japanese partners HAMA K.K. and ITOCHU Aviation Co., Ltd., as well as U.S. partner ITOCHU Aviation, Inc. to fulfill the order.
Comprehensive System Package
Each Black Widow system includes two aircraft, one WEB ground control station, and additional mission-critical components designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations at the tactical edge. In-country training and light maintenance support will be provided by HAMA personnel who receive direct training from Red Cat. A concurrent contract will also cover spare parts and training to ensure long-term operational readiness.
Strategic International Expansion
CEO Jeff Thompson emphasized the company’s commitment to providing Japan with reliable ISR capabilities to support military readiness. The Black Widow system features durable design and secure communications, positioning Red Cat as a growing player in defense drone technology for international allies. Red Cat plans to expand local involvement through future agreements in the region.
